There’s a specific pleasure, particular to July afternoons in New Brunswick, in ordering a cold beer from a bar that’s standing in the sand. At Morse et Marteaux’s Parlee Beach location, that bar exists, and it faces the warmest saltwater bay in Canada. You can walk to it barefoot. You can carry the drink back to your blanket without crossing a parking lot.
The food operation beside the bar’s a smokehouse and lobster shack wearing sunglasses. Smoked brisket, pulled pork, and ribs come out of the same kitchen approach as our downtown location, but here the plates arrive sun-warm. The lobster rolls are what Parlee visitors have been asking for across half a century of summer vacations: New Brunswick’s signature crustacean, served without pretension, in a toasted bun, with a paper napkin you will almost certainly need.
Full lobster suppers are available for the full picnic treatment, claws and all. Hard ice cream from the canteen is available when the children insist, which will be often. Beer and wine are available for the parents who are not insisting but are slightly pleased the children did.
Parlee Beach Provincial Park is one of the Maritime summer’s defining places. The bay reaches twenty-eight degrees Celsius at the peak of August, warm enough to rival beaches several latitudes south. The sand stretches long enough that you can lose a volleyball game’s worth of distance without realizing. The sunsets do things to the sky that postcards still try and fail to describe.
The Walrus would approve. So, most likely, will you.

Shediac Wonderland is the family of Alice-in-Wonderland-inspired businesses created by Sébastien Després and Heather Wright. Le Moque-Tortue (our board game bistro), Morse et Marteaux BBQ (our smokehouses throughout Shediac), Le Griffon (bed & breakfast), The Neptune (our Drive-In Theatre), Adorable Chocolat (our artisanal chocolaterie), Bazar Neptune (Saturday market), the Shediac Renaissance Faire, and Witzend Tours & Adventures (tours, escape rooms, and concierge): each one a chapter of a larger story about what happens when a community decides to take play seriously.
