Every small-town hockey parent knows the specific quality of seven o’clock on a Saturday morning in February, when the rink is colder than the parking lot and the children have been awake since five. At Morse et Marteaux’s Shediac Festival Arena counter, that morning is met with a breakfast plate: eggs, bacon, sausage, and the kind of coffee that makes early tournaments feel slightly less imaginary.
The arena is the municipal hockey rink in Shediac, directly behind Le Moque-Tortue on Main Street. We run both the concession and the breakfast counter inside. The food takes two forms: arena classics and smokehouse classics, often in the same dish.
The arena classics are the ones every rink has: fries, hot dogs, popcorn, poutines. The smokehouse classics are the ones most rinks do not: brisket, pulled pork, and ribs, smoked on our own smokers using the same approach as our summer locations. The overlap is where things get interesting. Our poutines come topped with smoked meats. Our hot dogs arrive wrapped in pulled pork if you ask nicely. The French fries can be loaded in ways no hockey parent had any reason to expect on a Saturday morning.
This location exists because hockey season in Shediac is long, the tournaments are many, and warm food is a basic human right in a room where people are skating. A father of five warming his hands on a coffee cup at half-past six while his eight-year-old does warm-ups should not have to survive on vending-machine chocolate bars. Neither should the eight-year-old, afterwards.
The Walrus does not typically attend hockey games. The Walrus is missing out.
We are open during hockey season for local games and tournaments. Exact hours follow the schedule of the arena itself; we are there when there is skating to be fed.
The Festival Arena BBQ Smokehouse is open for hockey games and hockey tournaments throughout the regular hockey season. The breakfast counter opens early on tournament mornings.

Shediac Wonderland is the family of Alice-in-Wonderland-inspired businesses created by Sébastien Després and Heather Wright. Le Moque-Tortue (our board game bistro), Morse et Marteaux BBQ (our smokehouses throughout Shediac), Le Griffon (bed & breakfast), The Neptune (our Drive-In Theatre), Adorable Chocolat (our artisanal chocolaterie), Bazar Neptune (Saturday market), the Shediac Renaissance Faire, and Witzend Tours & Adventures (tours, escape rooms, and concierge): each one a chapter of a larger story about what happens when a community decides to take play seriously.
